We have been back in the UK for 3 weeks with lots of driving around the country. This is bit of a shock as it is the first time we have been in a car since May.

Saturday 2nd August

We left Commercy on Thursday and travelled 20 km to Saint Mihiel. There were only 5 locks to negotiate and we arrived at 12 noon. The town mooring was full but we moored on a short pontoon just above the lock at St Mihiel. The town was the birthplace of the Renaissance sculptor Ligier Richier (see Bar Le Duc) and there are 2 more famous statues in the town. On Friday we went for a long cycle ride which included a steep hill on the way home.  The hill was the sight of a major battle of world war 1(St Mihiel Salient). The Germans managed to capture St Mihiel and crossed the Meuse in September 1914 almost 100 years ago. This was the limit of their advance but the hill was not retaken until September 1918 (by the Americans).
